Baptism and

thanksgivings

The options

We are glad that you want to celebrate the birth of your child at St. Aidan’s.  We offer two options.  Neither one is better than the other.  One of our team will discuss with you which option best suits your situation.

Thanksgivings and Baptisms usually happen within the 10am Service on the third Sunday of the month. We book on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and can only accommodate a maximum of 2 families during each service.

Thanksgiving

This is a very special service that can be the basis for a great family celebration.  ‘Thanksgiving’ gives you the opportunity to say thank you to God for your child in front of your family and friends.  This option is now often taken by members of our own church because they want to allow their children the opportunity to make their own promises when they are ready.

If you would like to choose a Thanksgiving now, it does not stop you having a Baptism later.  Your child can be baptised when she/he is ready to make the baptism promises for him or herself.

Baptism

Baptism is also commonly known as 'Christening'. To have a Baptism at St. Aidan’s you must live in St. Aidan’s Parish, be on the electoral roll of St. Aidan’s or have a strong connection with the church. If you live in another parish you will need permission before you can proceed.  Talk to our Vicar, Rich, if you are in doubt - it’s not as bad as it sounds!

At a Baptism service, the parents and godparents stand at the front of the church and make a strong public declaration about their own  faith, commit to regular Christian worship and prayer, and affirm that they will raise the child in the Christian faith.  If you feel that you cannot make such a strong commitment at present, a Thanksgiving may be more appropriate.
