Funerals

A funeral marks the close of a human life on earth. It is the opportunity for friends and family to express their grief, to give thanks for the life which has now completed its journey in this world and to commend the person into God's keeping.

If you have lost someone close and need to make funeral arrangements there are a number of things you have to do.  Directgov has a useful checklist to guide you through this difficult time.

Funeral Director

We would recommend that your first contact should be with a local funeral director who will guide you through everything.  The undertakers nearest to St Aidan's are:

  • Co-op Funeral Care, 344 Holderness Road; Tel 329131
  • T S Annison & R Boddy, 365 Holderness Road; Tel 329327
  • J Parkin & Son, 3 Salthouse Road; Tel 376104
  • Mike East, 239 Southcoates Lane; Tel 375214

But there is a full list in Yellow Pages.

Register Office

You need to register the death within 5 days at the Register Office in the area where the person died.  Hull Register Office can be found at Municipal Offices, 181-191 George St, Hull, HU1 3BY, Tel 615400.

Funeral Service

St Aidan's can offer a Christian burial service either in Church or at the Crematorium or Cemetery.  The service usually takes place in the following order:

  1. Short opening prayers
  2. The 23rd Psalm, said together
  3. A tribute to the deceased
  4. A hymn or a song with special meaning
  5. Prayers for the deceased and for family and friends
  6. The Lord's Prayer, said together
  7. Prayers of Commendation and Committal
  8. A Blessing

Music is usually played as people enter and leave.  The service can be adapted in many ways and we would visit you to discuss all the options. The Cof E website is worth a look.

After the service

Families often want to give mourners the opportunity to meet and chat after the service and, in recent years, a number of families have made use of the Cafe at St Aidan's.  This has been particularly suitable when it follows a service in church.

Bereavement

Bereavement is always a difficult time.  St Aidan's is available to help you through it.  We can pray with you, or for you and your family.  Or you might want to talk to one of our 'listening team', or our Parish Nurse. Cruse also have some helpful information.

Remembrance

St Aidan's organises Remembrance Services on Mothers' Day in March and on Remembrance Sunday in November.  If you have had a funeral service recently conducted by one of the St Aidan's team, you will be sent a personal invitation to the November service - but anyone is welcome to either service.
